<p>When the bid was submitted in 2003, nine cities were competing to host the games. </p>
<p>Paris was the favorite to win the bid but reportedly lost out due to a series of unfortunate events. London won and Paris followed second, while Madrid, New York City and Moscow were next in the order of runner-ups. </p>
<p>The games will be followed by the Paralympic games which will take place after the main Olympics.</p>

<p>About 204 nations are expected to participate in the events of the games. The number of athletes scheduled to attend are no more than 10,500 from these different nations of the world. </p>
<p>300 events will also be held in at least 26 sports in varying categories. </p>
<p>The ceremony is billed to start on July 27, 2012 and end on August 12. </p>
<p>The costs of staging the games are envisaged at about 2 billion pounds sterling and the money for the games is to be raised by the Central Government, the UK National Lottery, the Mayor of London as well as the London Development Agency.</p>
